In 1946 artist Clifford Ellis founded the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, England, with the intention of educating art teachers. His partner in this enterprise, and one of the most prominent instructors on staff, was his wife, Rosemary, a graphic artist and illustrator. Clifford and Rosemary collaborated on the design of nearly one hundred book jacket illustrations between 1945 and 1985 for the New Naturalist Series published by Collins, as well as decorative tiles, ceramic mosaics, and posters. Their first poster design commission was from London Transport; the resulting series of four posterseach featuring a different bird and its habitatis presented in this boxed notecard assortment.

These colorful postersalong with many others commissioned by London Transportinvited the public to explore the Undergrounds many destinations, both within and beyond London city limitshistorical sites, quiet gardens, royal parks, theatrical events, quaint villages, and other entertainment sites. The images in this assortment are held in the collection of the London Transport Museum, which houses one of the finest poster archives in the world.
